Whitireia New Zealand offers a range of practical, FREE, one-year, full-time courses designed especially for school leavers.

  • Certificate in Beauty and Hairdressing

    The Whitireia Certificate in Beauty and Hairdressing is a one-year full time course starting in February, for those interested in the hairdressing and make-up artistry industries. LEVEL 3

  • Certificate in Work Skills (Office Skills/Computing)

    Youth who wish to start their tertiary training, and need basic computing, English, literacy/numeracy and entry business skills - look no further. This course includes recreation, career planning and general life skills. LEVEL 2

  • Certificate in Carpentry

    Work towards becoming an apprentice carpenter on this course, approved by the Building and Construction Industry Training Organization (BCITO). LEVEL 3

  • Certificate in Automotive Engineering

    Become an apprentice car or motor mechanic after doing this course, or go on to further study. Good maths skills are needed. Graduates can also get work in the car retail sector. LEVEL 2

  • Certificate in Electrical Engineering

    Gain knowledge and practise in wiring skills to work in the electrical trade. Good maths skills are needed. Work experience on the course helps graduates find paid work as apprentices or in retail sales. LEVEL 2

  • Certificate in Plumbing, Drainlaying, Gasfitting and Roofing

    Work towards becoming an apprentice plumber, gasfitter, drainlayer or roofer on this course. LEVEL 3

  • Certificate in Trade Skills

    Try out a range of trade skills including electrical, motor mechanics, plumbing, and carpentry on this course, which also includes road safety and driving skills. Graduates are well prepared for further study. LEVEL 2

  • Certificate in Outdoor Adventure

    Gain skills in a wide range of outdoor adventure activities in the mountain, bush, and aquatic enviroments. LEVEL 3

  • Certificate in Work Skills (Retail and Cosmetic Services)

    The Certificate in Retail and Cosmetic Services is a one-year, full-time course specifically designed for 16-17 year olds who want to gain a qualification in retail and cosmetic services. LEVEL 2

  • Certificate in Work Skills (Hospitality & Tourism)

    Gain essential skills and qualifications to get started in the hospitality and tourism industries. This is a one-year, full-time course specifically designed for 16-18 year olds. LEVEL 2

    The aim of these courses are to give students the confidence to study and gain a qualification to move into apprenticeships, employment or further study. Its a supportive way to transition from school, tertiary study and work!

    • Including literacy and numeracy support and individual learning plans for all students

Electrical Engineeering/Carpentry/Automotive Engineering/Plumbing, Gasfitting,Drainlaying and Roofing

  • Must be a school leaver between 16 and 17 years old (must not turn 18 within three months of programme start date)
  • Must enrol in full-time study in 2012
  • Must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • Must have 8 credits NCEA Level 1 in each of numeracy and literacy units or equivalent

Beauty and Hairdressing

  • Must be a school leaver between 16 and 17 years old (must not turn 18 within three months of programme start date)
  • Must enrol in full-time study in 2012
  • Must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • NCEA Level 1 or equivalent skills and knowledge

Hospitality and Professional Cookery/Retail and Cosmetics/Trade Skills/Office Admininistration

  • Must be a school leaver between 16 and 17 years old (must not turn 18 within three months of programme start date)
  • Must enrol in full-time study in 2012
  • Must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident

Outdoor Adventure

  • Evidence of suitability for Outdoor Adventure programme and relevant outdoor experience based on submitted log and interview 
  • Must be a school leaver between 16 and 17 years old (must not turn 18 within three months of programme start date)
  • Must enrol in full-time study in 2012
  • Must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
     

Retail and Cosmetics

  • Aged less than 18 years old with low qualifications (fewer than 12 credits in English (literacy) and/or mathematics (numeracy) at NCEA Level 1 or NQF Level 1) and have left or been exempt from school
  • Aged 18 or over and have left school within the last 26 weeks with low qualifications
  • Aged less than 18 and have been referred by Work and Income as a youth client
  • Aged less than 18, have left or been exempt from school with 81 or more credits on NQF but have NCEA results that show fewer than a total of 12 credits in English (literacy) and/or mathematics (numeracy)
  • Students on these programmes may be eligible for a travel allowance

Office Skills and Computing

  • Aged less than 18 years old with low qualifications (fewer than 12 credits in English (literacy) and/or mathematics (numeracy) at NCEA Level 1 or NQF Level 1) and have left or been exempt from school
  •  Aged 18 or over and have left school within the last 26 weeks with low qualifications
