Certificate in Beauty and Hairdressing 

The Whitireia Certificate in Beauty and Hairdressing is a one-year full time course starting in February, for those interested in the hairdressing and make-up artistry industries. LEVEL 3

Description

Level 3 programme

Whitireia New Zealand has been delivering Beauty and Hairdressing courses for over 10 years.  We have built up a strong team of industry experienced and qualified tutors who each offer different areas of expertise. Our tutors lead, motivate and inspire students to ensure their success. 

As a Beauty and Hairdressing student, you will be based at Porirua Campus.  Learn about make-up, cosmetics, beauty products and hairdressing.  Gain essential theory and practical experience during scheduled salon days and other promotional events held throughout the course, where you work on actual customers. 

Included in this course is the National Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) (Level 3) and the opportunity to sit the internationally recognised City and Guilds Certificate in Beauty Therapy.

Course Outline

Hairdressing Salon Support Level 3 
You will learn fundamental hairdressing and customer service skills to enable you to begin a hairdressing apprenticeship.  Learn to analyse the hair and scalp, shampoo, blow dry, apply colour (highlights and foils), conditioning treatments and hair-ups and provide professional consultation to clients.  Learn product knowledge, health and safety, and salon skills.

Make-up artistry
Students will get a thorough understanding of make-up application including day or night, wedding and period makeup. 

Nutrition
Gain a thorough understanding of healthy eating and food combination programme and be able to explain nutrition principals for Beauty Services.

History of Cosmetics Study
the history and theory of Cosmetic and Alternative Therapies .

Salon days 
Gain extensive practical experience with a range of clients during our professional salon days which are held regularly throughout this course.

Domestic Fees: $5,129 (Fee free with Youth Guarantee eligibility).

International Fees: $18,900 NZD

From 1 January 2012, membership in the Whitireia Independent Students Association (WISA) will be voluntary.   Whitireia New Zealand and WISA are working together to set up processes for this change.   

Entry Requirements

Domestic students

NCEA Level 1 or evidence of equivalent skills and knowledge. 

International students

Proven equivalence to domestic entry requirements and IELTS 5.5 or equivalent

Career Opportunities:

Graduates are work-ready for apprentice training as a Hairdresser (having achieved the equivalent of six months of a hairdressing apprenticeship), or become a Cosmetics Retail Assistant or Sales Assistant.  

Further Study:

Graduates can continue studying towards the Certificate in Beauty Therapy.
