Gain knowledge and practise in wiring skills to work in the electrical trade. Good maths skills are needed. Work experience on the course helps graduates find paid work as apprentices or in retail sales.    LEVEL 2

Description

The aim of this course is prepare students with the knowledge and practical skills for employment and apprenticeships in the electrical trade.

By providing additional skills a student who successfully completes all components of this course is a much more attractive employment prospect to an employer.

The course includes the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Level 2), but also teaches a high level of practical wiring skills so that graduates will be immediately useful in employment.

Class times are Mon , Tues, Weds 8am – 4pm no Thursday

COURSE CONTENT

Students will complete all units required for the Certificate Electrical Engineering (Level 2).

The course covers the following:

practical trade skills (with underpinning theory)

  • Clipping and supporting of cables
  • 1 way lighting circuits
  • 2 way + intermediate lighting circuits
  • 10A socket outlets (including controlled sockets for waste-master)
  • RCD protected sockets
  • Range switch and socket
  • Water heating circuit and control
  • MEN switchboard construction and wiring
  • Distribution switchboard (non-linked) sub-main circuit
  • 20mm plastic conduit IPX4 socket outlet IPX6 lighting circuit

Single phase induction motor wiring

  • Testing windings
  • Reversing
  • Relay control

3 phase induction motor wiring

  • Testing windings
  • DOL starter Stop/Start/Inch + Remote Stop/Start
  • Reversing
  • Thermal overloads

From 1 January 2012, membership in the Whitireia Independent Students Association (WISA) will be voluntary.   Whitireia New Zealand and WISA are working together to set up processes for this change.   

Entry Requirements

Domestic students

8 credits NCEA Level 1 in each of numeracy and literacy units or equivalent; applicants with English not their first language require IELTS 5.5 or equivalent

International students

Proven equivalence to domestic entry requirements and IELTS 5.5 or equivalent

Career Opportunities:

Many of the students who have successfully completed this course have gained full-time employment in the electrical trade. They have completed apprenticeships and are now registered electricians.
