Learn to understand, speak, read and write English for study, work and everyday situations.

Study for a full year or enrol block by block.  Students who complete one block will exit with a certificate at the elementary or pre-intermediate level.  Students who complete the three levels will received a Certificate in English Language.

You will be required to sit the Whitireia Placement Test.  This will indicate which level of the programme you will be enrolled in.

Programme Overview

The Certificate in English Language is a 12 week block course.

This English programme offers flexible learning options to a wide of range of learners. It will suit international students who want to take up tertiary study in New Zealand or new New Zealanders who want to strengthen their English language skills to work and/or participate in New Zealand society.

This intensive English course teaches speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and develops effective communication in everyday situations. Learning is supported by a language lab and computer software.

The programme is open to all speakers of other languages who would like to improve their English language skills.

Textbooks are used to support all work undertaken in class.


Programme Outline

There are three modules: elementary English, pre-intermediate English and intermediate English.

Morning Programme:

The focus is on integrated language skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Vocabulary and grammar are part of the programme.

Afternoon Programme:

There are a range of classes including IELTS preparation, independent study skills, directed learning, English conversation and writing and computer sessions.

International Fees: NZD$390 per week

From 1 January 2012, membership in the Whitireia Independent Students Association (WISA) will be voluntary.   Whitireia New Zealand and WISA are working together to set up processes for this change.

Career Opportunities:

Graduates will have the knowledge and skills to communicate in English at an intermediate level in the four communication modes. Graduates can move on to study the Certificate in English Language (Advanced).
