Learn te prepare a range of materials for weaving, and using these, specialise in either raranga (kete, etc), whatu (cloak making, etc) and tukutuku (lattice wall panels) to create artworks and present these for exhibitions.   LEVEL 5

Programme Overview

Ngā Tapuwae o Hine-te-iwaiwa is a course that offers the opportunity for students to take part in research and hands-on learning of ancient art forms pertaining to Māori customary weaving.
 
Ngā Tapuwae o Hine-te-iwaiwa, or the footprints of Hine-te-iwaiwa, describes one’s journey in the pursuit to learn and master the ancient art form of weaving.  Hine-te-iwaiwa, as kaitaki (guardian) of the weaving, becomes also the kaitaki for this journey.
 
Students will learn various practices for preparing a range of materials for weaving and using these, specialise in one of raranga (kete,etc), whatu (cloak making, etc) and tukutuku (lattice wall panels) to create artworks.
 
On completion of this programme, students will have gained knowledge and competency to be able to prepare for, plan and produce woven art forms to a high standard, with ability also to present these for exhibition or other form of public display.

Domestic students

Students interested in this programme should have some knowledge or skill of weaving, and a strong desire to learn. Evidence of this may be requested in an interview.
