Diploma in Publishing (Applied) 

Get qualified for a career in publishing with this popular and highly regarded course.  Skills gained include editing, layout, project management and marketing for both print and digital publishing.     LEVEL 6
Students apply their learning to industry-based publishing projects and undertake work experience in publishing firms throughout New Zealand.

Level 6 programme

This highly regarded programme is the only full training course for publishing in New Zealand. Developed and run in partnership with the industry, the course is modelled on an apprenticeship. It focuses on practical experience and industry contacts. All of the course tutors are practitioners in the publishing industry. Students attend work placements in publishing firms. Guest speakers include publishers, editors, designers, sales reps, publicists, booksellers and authors. In addition, students on the course each take a manuscript through to publication, dealing with every aspect from developing the idea to selling the product.

The programme covers:

  1. Planning and promoting a publication (through manuscript assessment, market research, costing, scheduling, marketing and distribution)
  2. Production, from idea to printed or digital publication (through writing, word processing, editing, typesetting, and supervision of design and print)

 

The programme is run at the Wellington City Campus

International Fees: $19,500 NZD

From 1 January 2012, membership in the Whitireia Independent Students Association (WISA) will be voluntary.   Whitireia New Zealand and WISA are working together to set up processes for this change.

Domestic students

Tertiary qualification and/or evidence of relevant work experience based on interview.

International students

Proven equivalence to domestic entry requirements and IELTS 7 or equivalent

Career Opportunities:

Graduates readily find employment in any field that requires publishing skills in book trade and the government or corporate sector. Graduates are employed in editing and project management, typesetting and production work, and marketing and publicity roles in both digital and print publishing.

Employers recruit graduates directly from the course. In addition, an industry intern programme provides paid work for selected graduates.
