Diploma in Publishing

A flexible online course which can be studied full time or part time.  Receive tuition and mentoring from experienced publishing professionals.  Also an excellent option for people already in the publishing or book trade.     LEVEL 6

The course is fully online and can be studied full time or part time. It covers all aspects of the process and business of publishing books – editing, production, project management, and marketing.

 


Programme Overview

Level 6 programme

This programme is designed to deliver the highly regarded publishing programme in an online mode. The programme maintains a strong industry focus and individual feedback. The aim of the online programme is to provide flexibility for students to study alongside other commitments.
You can enrol in the online programme in the following ways:

  1. full time (one year to complete the Diploma)
  2. part time (two years to complete the Diploma)
  3. individual modules (16 weeks per module)

Programme Outline

An introduction provides an overview of the publishing industry. The four modules that make up the Diploma are:

  1. Editorial, covering manuscript assessment, editing and proofreading
  2. Book Design, Production and Technology, covering typesetting with Adobe InDesign, principles of book design and typography, electronic publishing and website development
  3. Publishing Project Management, covering project systems and production management
  4. Marketing and Trade Knowledge, covering marketing, publicity, distribution, contracts, royalties and the book trade

 

Introduction to Editing
Those interested in developing editing and proof-reading skills can study the Editorial module of the diploma as a stand-alone course. A valuable overview for beginning editors,  this  module also benefits editors with some experience, as it provides one-on-one feedback from tutors and an opportunity to 'test' your practice against industry norms.


Online students studying with Whitireia New Zealand use the Moodle Learning Management System (L.M.S).  Moodle is a highly interactive, self-paced learning platform.  Here at Whitireia, we have named our Moodle Whitireia Online, which can be accessed anywhere in the world and at anytime, 24 hours a day.

From 1 January 2012, membership in the Whitireia Independent Students Association (WISA) will be voluntary.   Whitireia New Zealand and WISA are working together to set up processes for this change.

Proven equivalence to domestic entry requirements and IELTS 7 or equivalent

Graduates readily find employment in any field that requires publishing skills in book trade and the government or corporate sector. Graduates are employed in editing and project management, typesetting and production work, and marketing and publicity roles in both digital and print publishing.

Employers recruit graduates directly from the course. In addition, an industry intern programme provides paid work for selected graduates.
