Call for nominations for Community appointees to the new Whitireia Community Polytechnic Council
The Education Act provides for four community appointments to our Council.
We are seeking nominations from members of the public who believe they meet the criteria laid out in our constitutional statute and who wish to be considered for these positions.

Commitment |
There is a full meeting of Council approximately 11 times p.a. Meetings, which are normally scheduled on the third Wednesday of the month, start at 5:30pm and usually last 2½ hours.
Council members receive papers approximately 5 days before meetings and it is important that members take the time to familiarise themselves with the material prior to the meeting.
Council members may be appointed to a committee of Council. This will involve additional meetings and preparation.
Members will also be invited from time to time to attend formal and social occasions hosted by the Institution. |

Payment |
Payment is by way of meeting fees only, although reimbursement of some expenses (e.g. travel) may be available. The current meeting fee is $280. |

Roles and Responsibilities |
The key functions and duties of Councils are set out in the Education Act 1989(S180 and S181.) These may reasonably be translated as follows:
i) Appoint the CEO and monitor/evaluate performance.
ii) Comply with the relevant statutory requirements.
iii) Influence and approve the strategy, investment plan, business plan and budget.
iv) Ensure the institution’s strategy is aligned with the Tertiary Education Strategy (TES) and priorities.
v) Ensure there is a sound risk management strategy.
vi) Approve significant capital expenditure and disposal of assets.
vii) Ensure that an internal audit function is implemented which allows unfettered reporting.
viii) Ensure that the Institution works towards Maori achieving education development aspirations.
ix) Ensure appropriate communication with key stakeholders.
x) Undertake an annual Council performance appraisal.
xi) Advise the Chair immediately of any potential conflicts of interest.
xii) Safeguard the culture and values of the institution. |

In fulfilling these responsibilities it is appropriate that individual Council members inform the wider Council about the views of their "constituency" but, having done so, step back and without pre-determination, act in a manner that is in the best interests of the Whitireia Community Polytechnic.
