Being taught by the best in the industry seems to be paying off for jewellery students at Whitireia.
2008 graduate of the Whitireia Bachelor of Applied Arts Jhana Millers has been awarded the 2009 A & E Metal Merchants Award for Contemporary Jewellery. Her work is created with predominately non-precious materials. The award ceremony is in Sydney on 3 December.
Millers work has already been on exhibit with the A & E Metal Merchants fourth annual survey exhibition, “Explorations 09”at Gaffa Gallery in Sydney from 15 October to 25 October and then Melbourne's Guildford Lane Gallery from 4 December until 20 December.
Learning from the best seems to be paying off for Millers. Lisa Walker, an internationally acclaimed jeweller, has taught intensive workshops at Whitireia over the last few years and has offered to mentor 2010 students on the degree programme.
This year Walker has just won the Françoise van den Bosch Foundation Award.
“We are lucky enough to have international greats like Lisa Walker come and mentor us,” says second year Bachelor of Applied Arts (Visual Arts and Design) student Jess Winchcombe. “These artists are so successful overseas, but they are huge supporters of this course and they continue to mentor on it every year– which just speaks volumes about the course and our work!”
