Whitireia New Zealand has a wide range of support services available to students. We encourage staff and students to assist in ensuring that Whitireia pastoral care reaches those in need.
Students are able to access financial advice, study help, health and counselling services and apply for hardship grants and scholarships administered by Whitireia New Zealand and the Whitireia Foundation. The Whitireia Learning Skills centre offers free individual appointments and study group sessions to build study skills and improve student results. Learning Skills services include one on one and small group assistance, peer tutoring, workshops and study skills sessions on a variety of topics, and online material. The centre works with you to improve study and learning skills, memory techniques, time management, planning of assignments, understanding of course work, examination techniques, note taking, editing and proof reading of assignments, reports and research. Health services are available on the Porirua (Main) Campus. Nurse appointments are free, but there is a small charge for Doctor’s appointments. Services available are: a full-time registered nurse, first aid treatment, screening, health promotion/advice, doctor, family planning/sexual health checks/contraception, free monthly, hearing check clinics and physiotherapy. Whitireia offers support for any student who has a disability, illness or health problem that may get in the way of learning. This includes students who need to spend time in hospital, or have had an accident and miss class. Students with disabilities can contact the coordinator directly, information is on the Whitireia website with a link at the bottom of the page.
Counselling services are available to students 24 hours a day. This service is provided by SEED and provides a range of services to students concerned with issues of personal or study stress, relationship problems, conflict situations, depression, anxiety, grief/loss, violence, personal trauma, harassment or addictions.
