Get Information Skills

We can offer orientation & information skills for both staff and students. We teach information and research skills at every level, for each year of study.
  • Class training sessions are assignment focused and based on action learning. Get quality information for your assignments. Students will develop research and information skills for the NZ workplace. See below for an outline of recommended sessions for your course.
  • At the library, we use a team teaching approach, and work with class tutors / lecturers during sessions.
  • For students with computer skills, the library orientation and online catalogue can be combined into a 1 hour session.

1: ORIENTATION with INFOTRACK Exercise

Duration: 20 - 30 mins

Location: Library, Te Kete Wananga

Learning Objectives: See the library collections & facilities. Understand how library items are organised on the shelves and where to find the most useful resources for your course. Info Track exercise reinforces the tour and directs the students to the relevant areas of the library collection.

2: ONLINE CATALOGUE SEARCHING & WEBSITE

Duration: 20 - 30 mins

Location: A202, Te Kete Wananga

Learning Objectives: Use the library website & catalogue to find out what is in our library collection & access your borrower record to renew your own library books & make requests.

3: Get W I S E R (Whitireia Information Skills Electronic Resource)

Duration: 60 mins (Introduction), self-paced tutorials, formative assessment, learning activities included & summative assessment can be arranged.

Location: A202, Te Kete Wananga

Learning Objectives: Research for beginners.

  • Info Needs: Brainstorming, Mindmapping, Key Questions, Key Words.
  • Finding Info: Catalogue, Internet, Journals, Databases, Newspapers, References, Statistics, Government Sources, Audiovisual.
  • Selecting Info: Evaluation, Notetaking.
  • Using Info: Referencing, Copyright, Plagiarism.

4 a: CUSTOMISED SESSION: Finding information for specific assignments

Our Information Literacy Librarian can develop classes to suit your students & assignments. For example, learning activities & assignment-based pathfinder exercises. Topics include: statistics, newspapers in research, government sources of information, community sources, sources for statistics, Index New Zealand journals, plagiarism & copyright. 4 b: INTERNET FOR RESEARCH

Duration: 60 mins

Location: A202, Te Kete Wananga, or computer lab.

Learning Objectives: Includes tips on searching & evaluating websites. Best of the web for your profession / trade.

4 c: JOURNALS, REFERENCE SOURCES & STATISTICS

Duration: 60 - 90 mins

Location: A202, Te Kete Wananga

Learning Objectives: Hands-on introduction to quality reference sources for your course. Including academic journals, Statistics NZ, online encyclopaedias & dictionaries.

4 d: DATABASE RESEARCH

Duration: 90 mins

Location: A202, Te Kete Wananga.

Learning Objectives: Learn to find articles using a specified database.

5 a: APA REFERENCING Workshop

Duration: 60 mins

Location: A202, Te Kete Wananga

Learning Objectives: Practice referencing books, journal articles, online articles & websites.

5 b: ELECTRONIC REFERENCING Workshop

Duration: 60 mins

Location: A202 training room or computer lab

Learning Objectives: Use Microsoft Word and an online referencing tool to store & organise references. Make bibliographies.

6: INFO BIT

Duration: 10 mins

Location: Your classroom

  • Learning Objectives: Meet the Information Skills Librarian & learn something about the library from the librarian visiting the class. Book up to 10 bite-sized sessions in a year.
