Hi-tech incubator to hatch business initiatives

Porirua is set for an influx of small hi-tech business activity in the coming months. Innovation Greenhouse Porirua, a business incubator project, was confirmed last week. Whitireia has been working on the initiative with Vic Link, the commercial arm of Victoria University of Wellington.

Whitireia has leased space at Todd Park which will house up to 15 tenants. Participants in the project will benefit from reduced administration costs and easy-in, easy-out leases. Porirua City Council has been helping Whitireia obtain Industry New Zealand funding for the project.

Academic staff from both Business and Information Technology Studies at Whitireia will have advisory and mentoring roles. The project will eventually become an integral part of the polytechnic's move to run courses on entrepreneurship and enterprise culture.

Representatives from Porirua's hi-tech sector see the incubator as being good for local business, while the Government has set aside $1.8 million a year in its Budget for just such incubators.
