Nursing students take a lead in promoting healthy life styles

Published on

A group of first year nursing students at Whitireia Community Polytechnic came up with several new twists in promoting healthy life styles. As part of their course work they were each asked to create a campaign to promote one aspect of healthy living. The various topics selected covered healthy diet, exercise, safe driving, preventing diabetes and sexual health.

The students spent one day on campus taking the message to other students and staff, using highly innovative and interactive displays. The next day they set up shop in the North City Plaza and took the same messages to the public.

Nursing is about promoting health and wellness. The students learned valuable lessons in getting across the message of how to promote healthy life styles.

Student nurses complete three year’s study to earn a Bachelor of Nursing degree, which allows them to sit State Finals and gain registration as Nurse. It could be a long hard three years but the lecturers at Whitireia encourage students to learn by doing and using innovative ways of demonstrating what they have learned. Of last years November graduates all 100% sat and passed State Finals.
