Semester two officially kicked off last week and our campuses are buzzing with renewed energy. Our students are the heart and soul of this place, and their energy ensures Whitireia remains a vibrant learning environment, even through the wet and windy winter months.
New and returning students have had the opportunity to attend a range of Orientation events over the past fortnight, with more on offer next week. We run a number of fun and engaging workshops, activities and events to prepare our new students for study, giving them the required information, knowledge and tools to succeed. This has included an introduction to the amazing support services available across our campuses.
Providing students with the support needed to succeed is at the core of what we do at Whitireia. From the very first engagement, right through to graduation, Whitireia staff aim to ensure students have the information, support and encouragement to help them complete their chosen programme of study.
Specific student services include: academic learning support; careers information and guidance; health and counselling services; an on-campus childcare centre; and a number of sports, recreational and cultural activities.
Student Support Services Manager Mary Weddell says one area that is becoming increasingly important to students is the financial advice and support service offered by Whitireia.
"We know it can often be a struggle financially to study over an extended period of time, so Whitireia does all it can to prevent this from impacting on students’ ability to succeed," she says.
"This is a crucial part of the significant investment we make in the provision of a wraparound support service for our students, and it is undoubtedly a big part of the reason that Whitireia is New Zealand’s top-ranked ITP (Institute of Technology and Polytechnic) when it comes to student success."
