Students participate in national tsunami alert exercise

Published on

Whitireia Journalism and Broadcasting students swung into action on Wednesday as “The Media” for a national tsunami alert, Exercise Tangaroa, involving Civil Defence personnel throughout the country.

The students, in week six of their programmes, operated as media, with teams rotating between the bunker under The Beehive and the student newsroom in Dixon St. In the bunker, the students operated out of a media room and took part in press conferences. In the Dixon St newsroom, students were on the phones to Civil Defence centres around the country.

The students also operated closed social media accounts which were connected with exercise players, who in turn responded to social media activity.

All students involved achieved a story assessment which was embedded in the activity, and it was a fantastic learning experience for both sides. At a debrief with Ministry of Civil Defence staff on Thursday they thanked the students for the real life experiences they gave volunteers around the country in regards to dealing with media.
