Whitireia graduate Mathias Te Moananui received top honours at the L'Oréal Style and Colour Trophy Awards held at Auckland's St Matthew-in-the-city on Saturday night.

The judges, top international stylists Stephen Marr and Tracey Hughes, said the 25-year-old master colourist’s submission was “directional and relevant, but also a look that someone could see in a magazine and be inspired to try themselves."

Mathias's entry had a "contemporary and effortless feel," said Marr. "It's editorial, it's fresh, and it shows evidence of technical skill."

Mathias was born and raised in Wellington, and is a graduate of the Beauty and Hairdressing programme at Whitireia. He currently works at Buoy Salon and Spa in Willis Street, where he is known for his exceptional skills in free-hand colouring.

In October, he will travel to Portugal where he will recreate his winning look live on stage before a panel of judges at the Global Awards.
