Award for historical writing project

Well done to Geoff Allen, recipient of a New Zealand Society of Authors/ Auckland Museum Research Grant. Geoff’s winning proposal involves researching the New Zealand Land Wars.

"In the field of writing about Pakeha/Māori whanaungatanga you have to do the miles and the time. I did 1,500 kms around Mt Taranaki and spoke to as many experts as I could. This led to getting the museum grant. The iwi historians might have a different perspective to the history books I'm reading at the museum, but I see that as a good thing. History isn't one fixed list of facts, it's always about perspective. You have to tell your story and tell it well.

"Ko Geoff Allen ahau, he kaituhi au o Tamaki. Ko Ngati Pakeha. Ko Waitakere toku maunga. Tihei mauri ora!"
