Online Continuing Professional Development

Our online education portal offers a range of short courses that use interactive assessment, audio, text, animation and video to support ongoing professional learning allowing them to be completed anytime, anywhere, at your own pace. Modules provide access to a wide range of topics and resources and hours contribute to required professional development hours. Available courses include:

Professional Development Seminars and Workshop

We offer one day workshops where you can sharpen your assessment skills using superb simulation suites, using medium to high fidelity technology. They provide professional development hours to meet continuing education requirements for health professionals. The following workshops are being offered at the Porirua campus in Semester Two:

Shock: 30 September 2017, 9am – 4pm, $225 (inc GST)
Update your knowledge of shock with a focus on Hypovolaemia and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). The clinical impact of fluid management and acid base balance is specifically addressed through the use of interactive scenarios, while an Acid Base Workshop is also available to consolidate learning. This is a clinical seminar aimed at fine tuning clinical assessment skills and supporting practice development.

Core Immediate Resuscitation: 09 October 2017, 9am – 4pm, $230 (inc GST)
Update your resuscitation training to comply with the New Zealand Resuscitation Council (NZRC) guidelines. Our philosophy is to have a multi-disciplinary health team approach for resuscitation training in order to maintain practice consistent with the new certification of skill levels. Course content includes adult CPR and choking, AED, child/infant CPR and choking, airway management and practical assessment.

Immediate Response Resuscitation is a highly specialised area of clinical practice, requiring an advanced level of skill development and clinical expertise.

Core Advanced Resuscitation: 09 October 2017, 9am – 4pm, $344 (inc GST)
Build on your Immediate Response Resuscitation skills with the Advanced Response Resuscitation Course. Skills will be learnt through simulation, scenario and clinical seminars aimed at fine tuning clinical assessment and practice skills and supporting practice development. Course content includes advanced airway management, trauma, lethal rhythm recognition, manual defibrillation and training and working in teams. 

Advanced Response Resuscitation is a highly specialised area of clinical practice, requiring an advanced level of skill development and clinical expertise.

Physical Assessment: Mental Health & Addiction: 12 October 2017, 9am – 4pm, $295 (inc GST)
Sharpen your physical assessment skills when working with acute and chronically unwell people, and increase your ability to manage safe patient care. This one day workshop covers a range acute and chronic conditions, including cardiovascular and respiratory system assessment and risk analysis. With a focus on ABC head to toe physical assessment and ISBAR, the courses are designed for nurses at all stages of their careers, including newly qualified staff and experienced practitioners.
This particular workshop is tailored to nurses working within the mental health and addiction sector.

Mental Health: Responding to Distress: 7 November 2017, 9am – 4pm, $295 (inc GST)
This one day workshop aims to provide you with an understanding of mental health, enabling you to recognise and respond to signs and symptoms of mental distress. This workshop is suitable for those working in the health and social sector. Topics covered include stigma and discrimination, responding – communication and assessment, assistance in crisis, safety and suicide, support and treatment.

Physical Assessment: Aged Care: 28 November 2017, 9am – 4pm, $295 (inc GST)
Sharpen your physical assessment skills when working with acute and chronically unwell people, and increase your ability to manage safe patient care. This one day workshop covers a range acute and chronic conditions, including cardiovascular and respiratory system assessment and risk analysis. With a focus on ABC head to toe physical assessment and ISBAR, the courses are designed for nurses at all stages of their careers, including newly qualified staff and experienced practitioners This particular workshop is tailored to nurses working within the aged care environment.

Communication (Human Factors & Crisis Mgt): 30 November 2017, 9am – 1pm, $175 (inc GST)
Discover the importance of communication, assertiveness, awareness of human factors, and crisis management. This one day workshop is designed for participants to develop awareness of the nature of human error and the importance of utilising clear multi-disciplinary teamwork and communication in order to mitigate risk and void negative patient outcomes. This workshop is for all health professionals.
